Ribonucleic acid systems present in dormant embryos of red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) were studied. Sucrose gradient centrifugation was used to isolate ribosomes of dormant embryos and embryos imbibed for various times in the light. In dormant embryos, ribosomes existed as monomers. After imbibition, a gradual decrease in the monomers was observed, with subunits and polymers of ribosomes detected within 4 hr. When poly U was added to homogenates of dormant embryos, formation of polysomes was observed after a 15-min incubation at 25℃. However, artificial polysome formation required some factors from heavy particles in the homogenates.
