The simultaneous recovery of cell division and chlorophyll synthesis in "giant", "bleached" cells of the Emerson strain of Chlorella vulgaris which occurs upon exposure to light has been investigated using the two inhibitors of protein synthesis, chloramphenicol and cycloheximide. With both antibiotics, it has been found possible, under suitable conditions, to separate cell division and chlorophyll synthesis. The best separation is, obtained with those chloramphenicol treatments which severely inhibit chlorophyll synthesis and the development of a photosynthetic capacity but without affecting cell division. The separation achieved with cycloheximide is less clear-cut. The significance of these results is discussed with particular reference to the relationship between chloroplast development and other events occurring in the cytoplasm.
