Iodoacetate greatly retarded the uptake of sucrose and slightly affected its inversion by radish root slices. Carbohydrate content of the samples decreased substantially both in water and in iodoacetate. Feeding with sucrose led to marked accumulation of carbohydrates and supplemental addition of iodoacetate induced less accumulation of carbohydrates. Iodoacetate caused exudation of nitrogen fractions into the culture media. Protein synthesis via amino acids seems to be operative in iodoacetate treated slices. It is also suggested that nitrate-N, in presence of sucrose, is converted into peptides and proteins. Addition of iodoacetate to sucrose media inhibited this pathway of protein synthesis. Both sucrose and iodoacetate (4×10^<14>M) stimulated the CO_2 output whereas 25×10^<14>M iodoacetate did not change the CO_2 output when compared with that of controls. Sucrose and iodoacetate (4×10^<14>M) when joined together masked the accelerating effect of each other.
