Low and high concentrations of iodoacetate stimulated and inhibited the CO_2 production, respectively. Soluble sugars in tissue slices decreased sharply in high iodoacetate and showed little decrease in low concentrations of the inhibitor. The same pat-tern of changes was observed with soluble nitrogen fractions. Polysaccharides and proteins were subjected to slight, if any changes. Leakage of different metabolites from tissue slices was operative in low and high concentrations of iodoacetate; the magnitude of leakage being increased with an in-crease in concentration of the inhibitor. That low concentrations of iodoacetate may have increased CO_2 output through increased accessibility of substrates to enzymes in the cytoplasm, was suggested. In high concentrations, iodoacetate was thought to have, possibly, a general effect on cell permeability and enzymes and by so doing to have led to increased leakage and inhibition of respiration.
