1. Thiobacillus thiooxidans, isolated in our laboratory, was found to oxidize sulfur, but not thiosulfate. Tetrathionate is also oxidized slightly. Its ability to oxidize sulfur is inactivated even by such a mild treatment as keeping the cells in a frozen state. 2. Inhibitory action of alcohols on the sulfur oxidation increases as the length of carbon chain of alcohols increases. Carboxylic acids do not inhibit the sulfur oxidation at pH above their pK, while they strongly inhibit the reaction at pH below the pK. 3. The sulfur oxidation is inhibited by cyanide, azide, diethyl-dithiocarbamate and carbon monoxide, and the inhibition by carbon monoxid.e is not reversed by light. These results suggest the presence of metal enzymes in the sulfur oxidation system. The terminal enzyme of this reaction appears to be different from the usual cytochrome oxidase.
