1) One aspect of the iconography of the Cloister is the use of religious symbols or traditional forms to express contemporary events. For example the organization of the scene of the "Donation of Church", in which Christ Child blesses and receives the gift, is like a traditional "Adoration of Magi". 2) Some critics emphasized that several of the capitals are closely related iconographically to scenes decorating the walls of the Cathedral of Monreale, but there is never a complete correspondence between the two monuments. 3) The sculptors of the Cloister copied and transformed the elements of Northern French Italian and Byzantine designs. These different traditions were not synthesized but exist side by side on successive capitals.
