From the 13th century downward, there appeared a good many sculptors of Buddhist images in the Kamakura area. Koen (1442-1529) was one of those sculptors, and his achievements are represented by the twelve works he left behind. Most reputable among those works are the Shaka Buddha Image in Tennei-ji, the Ksitigarbha Image in Hoon-ji, and the Datsu-eba Image in Enno-ji. Almost all his works have the localised style of the Sung dynaty, and they are very valuable for studying the flowing current of Buddhist images made in the Middle Ages.
