Indian art are the religious art. From that point of view, particularly important are the arts of Buddhism and Hinduism. There are many differences in form between the two, in other words, each art has its unique form. But, fundamentally, they have the common ideals as the Indian religious art. Considerable scholars, nevertheless, neglect the importance of that fact. It is entirely due to the misunderstanding of the art of Gandhara. The art of Gandhara is not Indian art, but only the local works attributed to the Hellenistic or Romanic style. To the contrary, originally Indian are the arts of Sunga- and Gupta-dynasty, or the arts of Mathura and Amaravati, made in the same period with that of the Gandhara art. They emphasize the physical power on every statues, and it owes to the Brahmanical idea, which considers the body as the manifestation of "Vitality" or "Energy".
