Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665)'s paintings consist of landscapes, buildings, figures and other real materials (even non-real ones take real forms) which are all of antique style. His subjects are mythology, new and old testaments, history, poetry, allegory and tradition etc. The pictures are constructed after a closely knit design. The background is expected to spread out of the frame, and the figures are arranged in a mass in the center, to leave empty space at four corners. Most figures outside turn their faces towards the center. Each figure is in a different posture. And then some of his pictures produce an effect of movement. We can call Poussin's paintings "mass-compositon" with W. Friedlaender. Goup and individual, whole and part are situated logically, which means the harmony in Poussin's paintings.
