An image coded document storage system using newly developed rewritable magneto-optical disks with virtual-drive jukebox is examined. The jukebox machine is designed that it works as an optical drive as if mounting a 13 GByte disk. Access from a host to the individual medium is provided on one dimensional address space. This storage device can offer a closed file system even with removable media as well as it can do an open file system. An apllication example is realized, that deals with image coded documents. They are stored on one of the optical media through an image scanner, code compressor, and the cartridge manager in battery-backuped controller of the jukebox. Document storage software is easily developed because it is unnecessary for the programs to manage optical disk cartridges in the jukebox.
