Reaction of 3-benzenesulfonyl-5,5-diphenyl-2-thiohydantoin (I) with two equimolar amount of piperidine resulted in the formation of 2-piperidino-4,4-diphenyl-5(4H)-thiazolone (II), whose structure was confirmed by its independent synthesis. The formation of II from I was revealed by the isolation of the intermediates. It was also found that the reaction can be used generally for the synthesis of 4,4-disubstituted 2-dialkylamino-5(4H)-thiazolones.
