The methods for labeling of 4-dimethylaminoazobenzene (DAB) and 3'-methyl-4-dimethylaminoazobenzene (3'-Me-DAB) with tritium at the specific position were studied. 2-, 3-^3H-Dimethylaniline, 3-^3H-aniline, and 3-methyl-5-^3H-aniline were obtained by the decomposition of the lithium derivatives with tritiated water or by catalytic hydrogenation of brominated derivatives with tritium. By choosing one of these labeled bases as a starting material, 2-, 3-, and 3'-(5')-positions of DAB and 3'-Me-DAB can be tritiated. The labeled position was ascertained chemically by substitution with a nitro group and from infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of their deuterized substances. In nitration of 3-^3H-dimethylaniline, some isotope effect was observed.
