Hydrolyzable tannins were found to be the active cytotoxic constiuents of three Greek Cytinus taxa : Cytinus ruber, Cytinus hypocistis subsp. hypocistis and Cytinushypocictis subsp. orientalis. The cytoxic activity was evaluated against a broad spectrum of cancer cell lines. The structure of the active compounds was investigated with NMR and electropray-MS/MS techniques.
