The test of internidal aggressiveness suggested a polydomous colony structure (=association of more than one nest) in the formicine ant, Paratrechina flavipes (SMITH). Queenright nests were monogynous and the frequency of queenless nests independent of queenright was as high as 62% (475 out of 762 nests). Based upon the egg/worker and/or larva/worker ratios together with the internidal distance, only 3.4% of those apparently queenless nests were regarded as actually queenright, the queens probably having been lost at sampling. Four colony types were recognized : monodomous queenright (24.7%, 140 out of 571 colonies), polydomous queenright (11.6%, 66 colonies), monodomous queenless (51.1%, 292 colonies), polydomous queenless (9.1%, 52 colonies). The rest (3.5%, 20 colonies) could not be classified.
