In Brisbane, Australia, Polistes humilis synoecus begins its annual colony cycle by 1) founding new nests by haplometrosis, 2) reutilizing old nests or 3) utilizing old nests continuously. In the latter two cases, many females overwinter on their natal nest and, in the spring, begin to lay eggs in old and new cells. Although many inseminated females huddle together on a nest, their intranidal relations are peaceful, and most of them have developed eggs in their ovaries.
