A Note on the Social Behaviour of a Subtropical Paper Wasp, Ropalidia fasciata (F.), on a Reconstructed Nest

Behaviours of foundresses and workers of a subtropical paper wasp, Ropalidia fasciata, were observed on a newly founded nest. Among four foundresses and two workers seen on the nest with only four newly constructed cells, I found a marked foundress which came from a destroyed nest, on which all the attendants were marked previously. Thus it was concluded that this nest was under the course of reconstruction by adults of two or more nests. Dominance behaviours were found among attendants but neither biting by the dominant nor taking depressive posture by the subordinates was observed. A worker which returned to the nest with flesh repeatedly mounted a foundress' body and seemed to force the foundress to receive the flesh. A foundress, which left the nest most often, laid an egg and this egg was not eaten by other individual during my observatoin. These facts suggest the social relationship among R. fasciata is rather loose and mild.
