The sex ratio at the place of emergence was surveyed for two congeneric butterflies, Pieris rapae crucivora and P. napi nesis by the belt transect census. Although the sex ratio at emergence was 1 : 1 in both species, the ratio obtained by the survey was male-biased in both species ; much higher in P. rapae, and changed seasonally, especially in P. rapae. The interspecific difference is probably caused by the difference in mate refusal behaviors of females ; P. rapae adopts both ascending flight and abdomen erecting behavior, while P. napi only the latter. This probably causes earlier emigration of young females from the emergence site and consequent male-biasedness there in P. rapae.
