• The role of the scales in the mating behavior of the silkworm moth, Bombyx mori, was examined. Males attempted copulation with a wide variety of models, including dried whole bodies, rolls of paper covered with wings and flat surfaces covered with wings, under the presence of the sex pheromone. They did not, however, respond to rolls of paper, or those covered with scaleless wings. The presence of the scales was, thus, particularly effective for the maintenance of the copulation attempt or the evocation of searching for copulation site by the abdominal tip.
