Changes in flight activity and oviposition characteristics associated with seasonal forms of a migratory butterfly, the rice plant skipper Parnara guttata guttata, were examined. Larvae and adults were reared in groups under 16 and 14 hr photoperiods at 25℃. Flight activity of tethered adults was measured using an automatic recorder. Females reared under 14 hr photoperiod, which corresponds to the migratory adults growing in early autumn, have higher flight activity, lower fecundity and a longer pre-ovipositional period than those under 16 hr photoperiod which corresponds to the non-migratory adults in summer. These physiological characteristics are common to insects in a migratory form and are thought to favour migration.
