Annual Population Fluctuation of Platypleura kaempferi (FABRICIUS) (Homoptera, Cicadidae)

A partially isolated population of Platypleura kaempferi (FABRICIUS) in a small garden was censused by counting its exuviae over a period of 17 years. The population was rather stable as compared with many other insect populations. The number of cicadas emerged each year was negatively correlated with the rainfall during the period of emergence and that during the period of hatching (four years before the emergence). Multiple regression analysis showed that at least 70% of the annual variation in the population density of the cicada could be explained by these two climatic variables, and that the former variable is considered to be more important than the latter in determining the population change.
