Differences in microhabitat among three sympatric species of pine shoot moths, Rhyacionia simulata HEINRICH, Petrova cristata (WALSHINGHAM) and Dioryctria splendidella HERRICH-SCHAFFER, were studied in a mixed plantation of Japanese black pine and Japanese red pine. Shoots located at the upper crown were more vulnerable to attack by all species of pine shoot moths than those at the middle or lower crown irrespective of pine species or pine shoot moth generation. This concentration of pine shoot moth larvae on shoots at the upper crown followed a marked difference in length of shoots attacked by different species of pine shoot moths. This differential preference for shoot length may prevent them from interspecific competition. In addition, there was considerable difference among the three species in cone preference ; R. simulata confined its attack to shoots, whereas D. splendidella attacked both shoots and cones ; and P. cristata preferred cones to shoots. This habitat specificity may allow their coexistence in a pine tree.
