Observations on the oviposition behavior in three colonies of Bombus (Diverso-bombus) diversus Smith were made keeping them in the wooden hives in 1959, 1963 and 1964 in Yaita City, Tochigi Pref., Japan. The results observed are summarized as follows : 1) The interval days of oviposition were 2-4 days, mostly 3 days in the colony B (Table 1), whereas it was rather irregular in the colony C (Fig. 2) ranging from 0.5 to 9 days. 2) Egg-cells were built on a brood cell on the cocoon just finished. In the colony B, egg-cells were built on the cells of 2 to 3 days old (m.=2.4 days) after cocooning but in the colony C on the cells of 0.5 to 1 day old (m.=1.3 days) after cocooning (Table 2). Some abnormal egg-cells were observed, most of which were made for lack of suitable laying place owing to the increased laying activity. 3) In general egg-cells were attachad on outside slightly below the top of cocoon, though they were sometimes in a space left between 2 or 3 cocoons and never upon the top of older cocoons nor on those of cocoons from which an adult bee has already emerged. 4) The behavior pattern of egg-laying queen was briefly described. Prior to oviposition, a queen did not build egg-cells by herself but worker bees helped the queen to build egg-cells. No mass of pollen were deposited into the egg-cell before oviposition nor before hatching of larvae. 5) The size of egg-cells, though it is very variable, the maximum width was ranged from 5.5mm to 7.0mm (mean=6.6mm), and even in a same cell often changed its size before hatching of larvae. 6) In the colony C, the total number of egg-cells made during the period between beginning of the foundation and its decomposition of the colony was 71 (Fig.2). The number of cocoons which developed from each egg-cell was varried between 5 and 14 (m.=7.9).
