To provide optimal service quality, mobile devices must adapt to variable network conditions. Soft capacity, coverage, and handoff produce variations in the quality of radio access links, while congestion in packet-switched core networks causes packet loss. A mobile must be able to detect variations in network conditions and configure itself for optimal performance. This means that mobile devices may have to switch between a large set of communication protocols throughout a communication session. At the physical layer, a mobile may be equipped with smart antennas, interference cancellation, and adaptive modulation/coding. Yet it must be able to use these functions when needed most. As always, the problem is how to find the right balance between size and power consumption. Efficient software implementation of radio protocols on reconfigurable processors is one of the most promising solutions to this problem.
