The dissolution kinetics of solid aluminum in molten Al-Si-Mg alloys was studied under static and isothermal conditions. The aluminum cylinders were immersed in molten Al-12.6%Si-Mg alloys with mangesium content increased up to 5% in an argon atmosphere in the temperature range from 571 to 603℃. The solution rate constant of aluminum increased with an increasing magnesium content of the melts and temperature. The dissolution rate was affected by natural convection resulting from a density difference between the boundary layer adjacent to the solid aluminum and the bulk melt. It was concluded that the dissolution of aluminum is controlled by the diffusion process of dissolved atoms through the boundary layer adjacent to the dissolving surface of the solid aluminum.
