The effect of height of a copper cylinder on the dissolution has been studied at 370℃ under static condition using three different immersed positions of copper. The dissolution rate of copper decreased with an increasing height of copper, L, whereas the rate was independent of immersed position of copper in the melt. The dissolution rate under static condition was found to be controlled by mass transfer in the melt, and the mass transfer process was dominated by natural convection due to hydrodynamic instability resulting from density differences in the melt. The effect of experimental conditions on the solution rate constant, K, under natural convection is expressed as follows : K=20.34(Δρ/ν)^<0.20>L^<-0.4>D^<0.8>, where Δρ is the buoyancy coefficient, ν is the kinematic viscosity, and D is the diffusion coefficient in the melt.
