A Further Study on the Variable Tensile Strain Hot Cracking Test of Austenitic Stainless Steels

This paper presents a further study on solidification crack susceptibility of metals by use of the Variable Tensile Hot Cracking Test Apparatus, which is able to vary arbitrarily tensile strain and strain rate. Four austenitic stainless steel sheets are employed in this study. From the test results, its is shown that SUS 310 is the most sensitive to cracking, followed by SUS 316 ; and SUS 304 and 321 are extremely insensitive. Furthermore, the strain rate dependence of cracking is clarified by the test in case of austenitic stainless steel as well as in aluminum alloys previously obtained. Then, it is suggested that the length of an existing crack with varying strain rate can be estimated by a simple experimental formula.
