Tensile load fatigue tests were carried out on transverse butt-welded joints with and without angular distortion. Experimental factors investigated are the amount of angular distortion, the effects of overstressing prior to fatigue test and the span for which the angular distortion is defined. They were investigated on steels of two different strength levels and the results were compared. The results showed that the fatigue strength decreases with an increase in the amount of initial angular distortion. It, however, was found that the strain range measured at a point 5 mm apart from a toe of the reinforcement can be well correlated with the fatigue life of the specimen regardless of the amount of angular distortion. An analytical method previously proposed by Yada et al. was extended to the estimation of cyclic strain range at a point 5 mm apart from the reinforcement toe as a function of stress range applied to a specimen, showing a good agreement with the measured values. The overstressing by static tensile load that is 1.25 times as great as the maximum stress in the subsequent fatigue test showed a remarkable increase in fatigue life of a specimen with angular distortion, when the stress range applied to the specimen was over approximately 20 kg/mm^2. While the influence of overstressing was hardly observed in specimens without a deliberately introduced angular distortion. If the angle of angular distortion is the same, a specimen with a shorter span, for which the angular distortion is defined, will exhibit a higher fatigue strength.
