Range of deviations in data reported in the previous paper was discussed to propose conservative fatigue design curves of defective butt welds of A533B steel in the intermediate cycle range. Discussion was also made on the given area on radiograph in evaluation of weld defect severity. Conservative fatigue design curves assuring required maximum stress in repeated stress cycling are proposed for sound butt welds with reinforcement and for defective butt welds without reinforcement. Parameter in the curves is weld defect severity defined on fracture surface α_s, and defects considered are porosity, slag inclusions, incomplete penetration, internal and surface cracks and undercut. When the failure life is above 2×10^5 cycles, the fatigue strength of a transverse sound butt joint with reinforcement is lower than that of a reinforcement-less transverse butt joint containing weld defects of critical α_s value or lower. The critical α_s value is 5% for porosity and slag inclusion, 2% for incomplete penetration, 1.8% for internal crack and 0.2% for surface crack. Size of given area on radiograph has a remarkable effect on the value of weld defect severity.
