This investigation has been conducted to determine the effect of roughness of base metal finished by emery polishing and other mechanical process on the impact strength of mild steel butt joint brazed with BAg8 or soldered with Pb-Sn eutectic alloy. According to the results, after brazing by BAg8, the impact strength of specimen with coarse surface, for example, polished by 120 mesh emery paper or machined by milling cutter, was excellent, its value being about 1.5 kg・m/cm^2, but, that of one with smooth surface, for example, polished by 600 mesh emery paper or superfinished by grinding stone, was poor, its value being about 1.27 kg・m/cm^2. After soldering with Pb-Sn alloy, the impact strength of specimen polished by large grain size emery powder (60, 120 mesh) was about 0.3∿0.35 kg・m/cm^2, but that of one polished by small grain size emery powder (400, 600 mesh) was about 0.45∿0.5 kg・m/cm^2.
