This paper presents some experimental evidence that surface roughness of base metal affects the butt joint strength and wettability of mild steel brazed with BAg-8 filler metal. The two abutting surfaces of specimens were identically finished by emery papers Nos. 60, 120, 240, 400, 600 mesh. These specimens were brazed with BAg-8 filler metal using a resistance heating furnace operated in hydrogen atmosphere. Tenslie test of these specimens gave the results showing that the strength of a specimen polished by emery No. 120 was very high, its value being 43.5 kg/mm^2, but the specimens polished by emery paper No. 600 were poor. These results indicated that the strength of specimen polished by large grain size emery powder was higher than that of ones polished by small grain size emery powder. Also, studies on spreadability of filler metal on the base metal with varied roughness were conducted. As the result, spreadability of filler metal on the base metal polished by large grain size emery powder (No. 60) was excellent and those of ones polished by small grain size emery powder (No. 600) were poor.
