Aluminum specimens consisting of couples of tubes and cores were welded by electromagnetic welding process. Three types of cores were used : single-tapered-, concave- and convex cores. Equipment with capacitor of 1000 μF was used under a charged voltage of 4.5kV. Effect of the tapered angle of core on the width of welded zones was examined. From the experimental results, the distribution of collision angles in each joint, and the acceptable range of them were decided. The results are summarized as follows : (1) The position, width and number of welded zones can be controlled by the shape and tapered angle of core. (2) The optimum tapered angles are 12.5, 17.5 and 7.5 degrees, respectively, for single-tapered-, concave- and convex cores. (3) Two factors which decide the width of welded zones are the distribution of collision angles in the joint, and their acceptable values. Welded zones are produced in a series of positions whose collision angles meet those in the acceptable range. (4) The tapered angle affects largely the distribution of collision angles, but a little the range of acceptable ones.
