The relation between the parameters "the concenrtation of dissolved sulfur, (S)" and the reheat cracking sensitivity was examined on 1%Cr-0.5%Mo steel by the following experiment and metallurgical considerations. (1) The reheat cracking sensitivity of each steel specimen was compared in terms of the critical restraint stress to produce cracking, σAW-crit obtained by the modified implant test. Seventeen steel specimens were used for the implant ; they contained 0.015 to 0.09%S and 0.1 to 1.3%Mn. (2) The sulfide was extracted by electrolysis, and the (S) was obtained by reducing the weight of sulfur in the extracted sulfide from that in the bulk steel. (3) σAW-crit was plotted against the (S) ; there was a critical value of (S), (S)crit, at which σAW-crit began to decrease with an increasing (S) value. (4) A sulfur-manganese contents diagram, in which (S) and (S) crit were indicated, was proposed. This diagram showed that manganese reduced the (S) remarkably when its content exceeded the critical volue of 0.95%. (5) The correlation between the quantity of sulfide and σAW-crit was hardly recognized.
