A method which can avoid hardening in cast iron weld metal welded by the similar filler metal is proposed, in which the magnetic oscillating effect of welding arc is used. The high silicon hyper eutectic-type ductile cast iron electrode, which was previously produced by one of the authors as a suitable electrode for graphitization, is specially applied to this study. During welding, an arc column is always oscillated back and forth by magnetic field, and consequently the temperature of molten pool decreases obviously more than in the case without oscillation. As the temperature of molten metal is finally held under the liquidus of hyper eutectic cast iron composition, a large amount of graphite remains undissolved; then, an extremely soft and crack-insensitive weld metal is obtained, for there is little hard and brittle cementite.
