A design curve against fatigue crack propagation for weldments is proposed as a 99.5% confidence limit for 3, 335 data plots obtained for five types of steels SB42, SM50B, SPV50, HT80 and SUS304. The fatigue crack propagation data were obtained using transverse-butt-welded center-cracked-type specimens in which the tensile residual stresses were always induced around the crack tip. This tensile residual stresses made a critical stress ratio condition that the crack closure did not occur even under random loadings. That is, the applied stress intensity range coincided with the effective stress intensity range. The relationship between the effective stress intensity range and the crack propagation rate was unique regardless of material, welding process and loading conditions.
