The initiation and propagation of root crack of high strength steel (HT 60) in the wet underwater welding with covered electrode (D 5003) are evaluated by the TRC Test (Tensile Restraint Cracking Test) in oblique y, straight Y and 45°single bevel groove. The TRC test is used because the testing conditions of this method can be related to actual fabricating conditions. The fracture surface of specimens is observed with a scanning electron microscope. The purpose of this investigation is to determine by the TRC test the resistance to cold cracking susceptibility in the weld metals and HAZ induced by hydrogen. Furthermore, the relation is investigated among the diffusible hydrogen, the tensile restraint stress (=applied stress) and rupture time, and fracture surface pattern.
