Hydrogen stress (strain)-induced diffusion equation was originally formulated by the present authors in analogy with heat flow equation and with the insight of hydrogen-dislocation interaction, and the equation was solved by computer aided Finite Element Method (IIW Doc. II-A-326-73 and IX-836-73). It has been applied to analyze hydrogen redistribution and gathering behaviours during static fatigue (or delayed cracking) of high temperature hydrogen charged specimens of high strength steel. Such numerical results successfully gave a model picture of hydrogen delayed cracking where local hydrogen gathering interacts with local applied stress fields to make it possible to initiate micro-cracking there. Now the above mentioned technique is applied to analyze hydrogen behaviours in weld and its heat affected zone and the hydrogen redistribution profiles at various moments after welding are computer simulated by use of 3-dimensional graphic output techniques. And the detailed affects of preheating and postheating on hydrogen redistribution behaviours are simulated and the results are correlated with acoustic emission experiments on y-groove restraint weld cracking.
