There is a build up welding process on mild sleel plates using an austenitic stainless steel-coated electrode for cavitation-proofing of water turbine runner vanes. Weld-distortions generated by this build-up welding are discussed and experiments to control these phenomena by using mild steel plates in a thickness of 4-25 mm are carried out. In these test procedures, bead-on-plate weldings were performed on mild steel testing plates, and the preheat temperature, welding current and degree of constraint effecting angular distortion were studied. As a result, the relations between welding condition and distortion quantity, and between distortion quantity and degree of constraint were clarified when build-up weldings were performed on mild steel plates by using austenitic stainless steel-coated electrodes. Further, an equation for weld distortion has been established from the experiments.
