Fatigue Crack Propagation Behavior in the Hardness Heterogeneous Field

When the fatigue crack propagates in the weld metal or H.A.Z., the propagation rate does not always increase monotonously and the crack path does not become straight everywhere. In this report, in order to obtain the fundamental information about the fatigue crack propagation behavior in the hardness heterogeneous field due to the welding, model specimens which had an induction hardened region were prepared, and the fatigue crack propagation tests were conducted under rather high stress conditions. According to the results of the examinations, when the fatigue crack propagated near the hard region which lay perpendicular or inclined to the propagation direction, the propagation rate had a close connection with the cyclic crack tip opening displacement (ΔCTOD), and the propagation direction depended on the asymmetry of the plastic region shape around the crack tip. The cyclic elasto plastic analysis based on the F.E.M. model was employed and the results showed that ΔCTOD was related to the cyclic equivalent plastic strain range distribution in the vicinity of the fatigue crack tip.
