Fatigue Crack Propagation Behavior and Analytical Estimation on the Electron Beam Weld Bead

The fatigue crack propagation behavior on the electron beam weldment was investigated and its estimation was done by the cyclic elasto plastic analysis. The fatigue crack propagation rate increased monotonously when the crack tip, was remote from the weld bead. When the crack came near the bead, the weld bead was found to reduce its increment and on the fusion line, the rate became rather small. After the crack came into the bead, its propagation rate increased again continuously. The fatigue crack propagation path began to be inclined to the base metal as the crack came close to the bead. The weld bead was also found to influence the fatigue crack propagation direction. The fatigue crack propagation behavior estimated by the cyclic elasto plastic analysis was in good agreement with the behavior observed in the fatigue tests.
