Optimization of Friction Welding Condition for S45C Carbon Steel Using a Statistical Technique

The combination of welding condition (optinum welding condition) which produced rnaximum tensiie strength of S4 5C carbon steel friction welded joint with the notched tensile test specimen condition was investigated using the response surface method. As a result, the welding condition yielding maximum tensile strength at the weld was attained through a steepest ascent path. And, an accurate second order equation for predicting the weld strength was established. In the confirmation experiments using the predicting equation, a successful weld was obtained under the optimum welding condition. But, the optimum welding condition requires a larger burn off quantity. Therefore, it is necessary to consider an economic aspect such as less burn off quantity. Moreover, the observation of the successful welds shows a fine grain ferrite perlite layer having a wide distribution of comparatively low hardnesses over the heat affected zone of the weld.
