The effects of the bulge shapes and normalizing of welds upon the low temperature tensile strength of gas pressure welded joints were examined by using an experimental design method. As a result, optimum welding conditions for preventing a brittle fracture of the joints were found out. Furthermore, the tensile strength of the joints of various kinds of reinforcing bars according to the above optimum welding conditions was confirmed at a low temperature in actual service structures. On the other hand, a method of confirming whether normalizing teas carried out or not by the hardness tests of welds was proposed for quality control of welds. Then, the gas pressure welded joints were clarified to be applicable to low temperature service structures.
