In this paper, firstly, metallurgical properties in heat affected zones of gas pressure welded joints of reinforcing bars were examined. Secondly, the brittle fracture initiation characteristics in heat affected zones were investigated by low temperature tensile tests using circumferentially-notched specimens. Through these two steps, the effect of normalizing the welds for the improvement of the low temperate toughness were confirmed. As a result, the brittle fracture initiation temperature of a circumferentially-notched specimen was found to have a correlation with the fracture transition temperature by Charpy impact tests. The fracture transition temperature in turn was revealed to hare a correlation with the Vickers hardness of gas pressure welds. The Vickers hardness would be useful to evaluate the low temperature toughness of field gas pressure welds.
