A recrystallization-etching technique to observe plastic deformation in both weld and heat affected zone (HAZ) in mild steel has been developed. Annealing at 923 for 10.8 ks was found to be suitable. By the annealing, the plastic zones with plastic strain above 0.2 in HAZ and above 0.12 in weld metal can be metalographically observed. At higher annealing temperatures (at 973K and 993K) the plastic zone in weld metal with lower plastic strain (0.07) is revealed. The technique has been successfully applied to direct observation of local plastic deformation at notch tip in both HAZ and weld metal of specimens loaded at room temperature and 523K. It is found that the plastically deformed zone size, when cyclically loaded at 523K, increases more rapidly with increasing cycles than at room temperature. This could be said to be due to the occurrence of dynamic strain aging at 523K in this steel.
