Creep plastic zone with creep plastic strain above 0.12 and above 0.02 in double edge notched specimen (net section area of 8-mm width and 6-mm thickness, 0.3-mm width notch of 0.5, 1, 2 and 11-mm depth) was observed by the subsequent recrystallization thermal etching technique. Specimens were crept at 650℃ in air at initial net stress of 108 MPa at various times in order to observe the crack initiation and the development of creep plastic zone. Both creep crack initiation time and rupture time increased with increasing notch depth till 2 mm, then became constant. The transition of the initiation time and rupture time from the increase to the saturation was found to be due to whether or not the gross creep plastic zone (creep gross yielding) is formed before the creep crack initiation. The creep crack initiation site on the notch root surface is discussed taking into account the creep gross yield.
