Epilachna vigintioctomaculata Motschulsky occurs in the Far East, viz., Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Siberia, Sakhalin, Kunashiri (the Kuriles), North China, Kansu and Szechwan. According to Takahashi (1932) who has studied the distribution of the species in Japan, the southern limit coincides with the annual isotherm of 14℃. However, the present author does not agree with Takahashi so far as the distribution of the insect in North China is concerned. The author is of opinion that the mean temperature of the summer from May to October may be more available to indicate the southern limit than the annual mean temperature, as the insect likes to occur constantly in the place where the mean temperature in summer falls to, or below, 20.4°., while it frequents irregularly in any place where the mean temperature shows 20.5°to 21.5°. It would appear obvious, therefore, that the southern demarcation line of distribution lies in a relatively narrow region between the isotherms 20.5°. and 21.5°. From the above the limit-region is shown in Japan along the Pacific coast of the central and western parts of Honshu, in Korea on the southern extremity of the peninsula, and in North China on the northern boundary of the plain and on the base of the Shan Tung Peninsula. On all accounts the insect possibly occurs in the Shan Tung Peninsula though it is unknown from there at present. Outside of the limit-region it appears to occur constantly in some lower temperature regions forming biological islands as seen in the mountainous parts of Shikoku and Kyusyu.
