Production of new queens in a colony of Bombus (Pyrobombus) ardens ardens SMITH, kept in an observation box, started as early as at the 3rd batch and continued to the last batch. Of the 85 emerged new queens 12 (=14.1%) became workerlike queens. No difference was observed in fresh body weight between workerlike queens and normal new queens at the time of emergence, nor in body size between workerlike queens and overwintered queens collected on flowers in early spring. Workerlike queens remained in the maternal nest for a long period and participated in all kinds of colony tasks just like workers. On the contrary, normal new queens usually stayed in the maternal nest only for several days and seldom participated in colony tasks.
