• Hydropsyche japonica IWATA and H. nakaharai TSUDA are synonymized with H. setensis IWATA, and H. buyssoni ULMER is regarded as incertae sedis. Keys to the males, females and larvae of the Japanese species of Hydropsyche are provided. Comparing with Hydropsyche species recorded in the other regions of the world, the Japanese species of Hydropsyche are tentatively recognized as consisting of two species groups, which are distinguishable by the male and female genitalia segments along with the larval structure, that is, species group A : orientalis MARTYNOV, albicephala TANIDA, nevae KOLENATI, yaeyamensis TANIDA, setensis IWATA and species group B : selysi ULMER, dilatata TANIDA, gifuana ULMER, ancorapunctata TANIDA.
