The gray starling's response to artificial eyespots fixed on both sides of the thorax of larvae of Bombyx mori is related to their size. Large eyespots exert an intimidating effect and small ones a deflecting effect. Even small eyespots may have a frightening effect if they are arranged to mimic a bird's predator.
