The faunal composition, size, colouration and nest of termites were studied in a tropical rain forest of West Malaysia. Fifty-seven species of termites belonging to 23 genera in 6 subfamilies and 2 families were observed and 52 species were found in a 1 ha plot. The termite fauna was characterized by the abundance of Termitidae in the number of species and by the absence of Kalotermitidae. Hypotermes was newly recorded from Malaysia. The termites inhabited almost all strata of the forest, ranging from the top layer of the trees taller than 30 m down to a depth 30 cm in the soil. Nasutitermitinae was the richest of all subfamilies in the variety of colouration and nest sites as well as in the number of species.
