Esterase and malate dehydrogenase isozymes were analyzed by PAGE among the population of Apis cerana japonica RADOSZKOWSKI in 9 distinct localities in Japan. In A. cerana the specimen was generaly monomorphic. No differences in phenotype were observed between both sexes. Only one colony, sampled in Kagoshima prefecture, revealed esterase variation. The A. mellifera L., samples taken as a control were clearly polymorphic. Three distinct phenotypes for esterase and six for malate dehydrogenase enzyme were found. Malate dehydrogenase isozymes were unlike between both sexes in the A. mellifera L. Migration of the esterase isozymes were faster in the A. mellifera L. polulation, whereas that of malate dehydrogenase isozymes were slightly faster in A. cerana group.
